CURRENT ISSUE

Issue 01

AUGUST 2026

When your logo is doing all the work and your positioning, none of it.

In a market where almost any business can look polished, visual quality is becoming table stakes. The real advantage is being easy to understand, trust, and recommend.

IN THIS ISSUE

The signal: professional polish has never been cheaper to produce, and every market is filling with businesses that look established and sound interchangeable. Why it matters: buyers now research earlier and more independently—94% of B2B buyers use AI in the purchase process, yet fewer than half describe the sellers they meet as trustworthy. Our view: the advantage has moved from looking credible to being understood. Below—the pattern we keep seeing, the diagnosis underneath it, and one test you can run this week.

01

The Signal

AI is accelerating content production and shortening the distance between discovery and decision. More businesses look capable but sound increasingly interchangeable.

02

Why It Matters

Buyers compare options earlier and faster. Vague positioning and buried proof can remove a business from consideration before a meaningful conversation begins.

03

The FourStage View

Visual identity should express a business strategy not substitute for one. The brands positioned to grow are easy to understand, trust, and accurately describe.

A Note from the Founder

For years, I told founders the same handful of things in discovery calls, the ideas that actually move a brand then watched them evaporate when the call ended. So I’m writing them down, one issue at a time.

YOUR MOVE

Run the three-question clarity test.

Ask three people outside your company:

  • What do you think we do?
  • Who do you believe it is for?
  • Why would someone choose us?

If their answers are vague or inconsistent, the next investment should begin with positioning.

The logo was not the problem.

The visuals had already done their job. The real problem was underneath them: broad positioning, interchangeable language, difficult-to-distinguish offers, and the strongest proof buried out of view.

The teardown scorecard

POSITION · Too broad.  MESSAGE · Interchangeable.  OFFER · Difficult to distinguish.  PROOF · Credible but buried.  IDENTITY · Polished and professional. The visual brand was the strongest part of the system but it was being asked to carry what the strategy had not yet clarified.

Polish is becoming table stakes.

AI and accessible design tools have made it faster and less expensive to produce professional-looking content. At the same time, buyers are evaluating businesses earlier and more independently. Looking credible may earn attention, but being clearly positioned earns understanding and trust.

The work underneath the logo

The answer is not another cosmetic refresh. The answer is to establish the position first:

  1. Define who the business is specifically built to serve.
  2. Name the important problem it solves.
  3. Clarify the outcome it can credibly own.
  4. Make the evidence behind that promise visible.
  5. Use the identity to express that position consistently.

Once those answers are clear, the logo no longer has to carry the entire business. It becomes what it should have been all along: the visual expression of a strategy people can understand.
